Description
The Pivot System of Dr Asher Zlotnik
Though many new systems of harmony have been developed since the late 19th century, triadic harmony is still one of the single most distinctive features of Western Music. It’s power and beauty have captivated the world for hundreds of years, and is still in constant use today. Triadic harmony is to music what the primary colors are to visual art – inescapable!
When triadic harmony is studied in tradition-based music classes, it generally is taught using the Roman numeral system that is essential in understanding the music of Western composers such as Bach, Mozart, Haydn, and so on. But since the late 19th century, composers like Bartok, Britten, Copeland, Bernstein, etc. have used triads in new and exciting ways. This presents a problem since the Roman numeral system is no longer adequate for analyzing/understanding their compositions.
This is where the Pivot System steps in and makes a direct connection between all triadic music no matter the century or style.
