Poly-Phonics III

An Ode to Greek Poetic Feet

14 Vocal Etudes in Greek Poetic Rhythm

Description

Keeping with the Poly-Phonics tradition of “Learn while you Sing”, these Patter Songs take the singers on a fun-filled journey through the basis of most rhythms in Western languages: the Greek Poetic Feet. From the ‘short-long’ of the Iamb to the ‘short-long-short’ of the Dactyl, each etude explores how each poetic foot can appear in a sentence, phrase, lyric, idiom, and many more linguistic expressions. Singers will become more aware of the rhythmic construction of multi-syllable words and, at the same time, be challenged to articulate many new word combinations they may not have yet sung.

Poly-Phonics I, II & III are collections of 1 to 6-part vocal etudes that utilize many of the styles present in both popular and classical music. Because of their brevity and focus, Poly-phonics can assist in the development of balance, blend, and rhythmic articulation, among other common elements of choral singing. Useful as warmups for choral rehearsals and in theory/ear-training classes, and with a humorous touch, these vocal etudes are fun, challenging, educational, and are perfect for every choir’s small-piece repertory. They are flexible in that they may be sung by any mixtures of male and female voices, can be transposed, and changes of tempi, dynamics and diacritical markings may also be altered.
